What is it?
The Award in First Line Management provides
current and aspiring team leaders/managers with a recognised qualification that
focuses on key skills required to be a successful manager. The programme is highly
practical and introduces tools and techniques for managers to hone their skills.
Each participant prepares a continuous development plan working with the trainer
to identify how this can be applied on his or her return to the workplace.
Who is it for?
Participants will normally be either practicing or aspiring first line managers/team leaders.
There are no formal educational requirements, however participants should have a
background that will enable them to benefit from the programme. This is likely to
be Level 2 Key Skills Literacy and Numeracy, or their equivalent.
How is the programme structured?
ILM qualifications are made up of units, each of which focuses on a specific
aspect of the role for which the qualification is designed.
Units have credit values, so each unit completed successfully gains you a
minimum of one credit. One credit is equal to approximately ten hours of notional
learning time.
The work isn't just time spent in a classroom or workshop, it also includes reading
and practicing skills on your own, researching at work or on the internet, discussing what
you are learning with managers, work colleagues or your trainer and anything that you do
in preparation for and completion of assessment.
The qualification programme consists of the following time commitments:
- Induction to welcome participants to the programme included in the first unit.
- A minimum of 34 hours of guided learning, excluding assessment, to be completed in one year. This is delivered in the form of one and two day workshops.
- 16 hours of additional reading and research (therefore the nominal learning time expected is 50 hours).
- Tutorial support for development and assessment.
- One final programme assessment, which is submitted at the end of the programme in the form of a written report (1000 - 2000 words). This assessment is marked and forms part of the qualification requirements.
- Each unit is assessed. These assessments are marked and form part of the qualification requirements.
- Completion of a personal development plan.
By the end of the programme each participant will have a formally recognised management
qualification and membership with the ILM and enjoy the benefits that membership provides.
