This course is for managers and supervisors in any sector and any organisation. It is designed to give managers all they need to know to help them handle health and safety in their teams in an effective manner.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:· 

  • Apply basic management principles and practices to a range of health and safety issues· 
  • Provide and implement practical health and safety objectives· 
  • Recognise risks which are present within the workplace and ensure appropriate control measures are in place· 
  • Ensuring that staff are provided with the appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to perform work related tasks safely and competently· 
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to determine root causes and ensure the appropriate remedial actions are taken· 
  • Understand the main legal requirements of employers and managers and how to act to fulfil these obligations· 
  • Recognise how industry affects the environment and how individuals can minimise pollution and waste
 

Course content

Eight Modules· 

  • Module 1 - Introducing Managing Safely
    Covers the statistics and emphasised the importance of managers’ responsibility for their teams· 
  • Module 2 – Assessing Risks
    Provides detail of the risk assessment process with a simple risk rating system and aids identification of hazards and associated risks within workplaces· 
  • Module 3 – Controlling Risks
    Identifies the methods and techniques for controlling significant risks· 
  • Module 4 – Understanding Your Responsibilities
    Introduction of the Safety Management System and the structure of the legal system and its application· 
  • Module 5 – Identifying Hazards
    Covers the main types of hazards typically encountered in the workplace · 
  • Module 6 – Investigating accidents and incidents
    How and why accidents happen, how to complete an investigation and the importance of investigation· 
  • Module 7 – Measuring Performance
    Proactive and reactive monitoring process and how safety inspections, checks and audits can improve standards in the workplace· 
  • Module 8 – Protecting our environment
    Introduction to waste and pollution control with a view to how best organisations and managers could help to reduce environmental impact

Assessment · 

  • Includes the completion of a written and practical assessment

Certification· 

  • On successful completion of the IOSH Managing Safely course and assessments, delegates will receive an IOSH Accredited Certificate
