UNIX / LINUX Administration Course – Part Two

Is it right for me?

A good knowledge of basic Unix administration is required. Attendance on the Unix Administration Part 1 course would give delegates all the required knowledge.

The course will use Sun Solaris but could be applied to the majority of commercial Unix flavours.

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Configure disk arrays to for redundancy or performance
  • Share files and access them across a network
  • Configure network addresses and host names
  • Configure and use the graphical administration tools
  • Manage system panics and core dump files
  • Configure a Jumpstart Server to remotely install hosts
  • Configure a Jumpstart Server to install flash archives
  • Monitor and manage memory use and swap space

Network Interfaces

  • The network/physical service and script
  • ifconfig, plumbing and unplumbing
  • Physical and virtual interface configuration

Configure system messaging

  • Configuration of the syslog daemon
  • Monitor network services

Swap and dump space

  • Disk slices for paging and swapping
  • System panics and crash dump configuration
  • Process core file management
  • Reading dump files

Sharing files over a network with NFS

  • Configuration of an NFS server and clients
  • Security of shared data
  • Troubleshooting

NFS automounter

  • Configuration of an NFS client to mount filesystems on demand
  • Direct and indirect maps

Creating raid disk arrays

  • The different RAID levels and non raid structures
  • Mirrored and mirrored/striped sets
  • Parity in RAID 3 and 5
  • Device and module configuration
  • Solaris Volume Management - command line and in Solaris Management Console

  • Configuration of roles and role access
  • Configuration of authorisations

Naming Services

  • Client resolution process
  • DNS servers and clients

Configuration of NIS

  • Technical overview of NIS (Network Information Service)

Configuration of a jumpstart server

Flash installation

  • Creating a flash archive

  • Installing from a flash archive interactively
