This is a significant achievement as there are only around 50 accredited ESEPs in the world, with only five of which reside outside the US.
INCOSE is the leading organisation in the world for Systems Thinkers, Systems Engineers and Systems Engineering. In 2004 INCOSE launched a formal accreditation programme for Systems Engineers, with three categories of certification (Associate, Certified Professional and Expert, designated as ASEP, CSEP and ESEP respectively). Whilst historically most INCOSE System Engineering Professionals (SEPs) have been based in the US, formal certification is increasingly becoming regarded as an important indicator of systems engineering excellence in the UK and Europe, and many government organisations around the world are starting to consider formal certification of key roles as part of their bid / proposal evaluations.
Ian regards formal accreditation of Systems Engineers as an important step towards ensuring that those in key engineering roles have an appropriate level of Systems Engineering competence in order to execute their role effectively.

He says “Certification works at many levels both for businesses and individuals. For businesses, it can be used as a tool to confirm that key engineering staff have the necessary skills and competence in order to perform their role effectively, and a programme of certification within an organisation can help improve its overall engineering capability. For individuals, similar messages apply: Certification provides a defined career path for those wishing to pursue Systems Engineering as a career and can help provide a differentiator in a tight job market.”
